By default, the Windows Server 2008 firewall is on. Fine, but by default it blocks ICMP (a.k.a. ping), which is bad/stupid. To enable, go into the Firewall (Control Panel --> System and Security --> Windows Firewall) and edit it so that it allows (wait for it) "File and Printer Sharing". No, I'm not kidding.
